The Institute for European Global Studies at the University of Basel is looking to appoint a

professor for European Global Studies

to commence on 1 February 2023. The appointee will preferably also serve as Director of the Institute (succeeding Professor Madeleine Herren-Oesch). The successful candidate's disciplinary focus must align with the research and teaching profile of the Institute for European Global Studies.

The Institute for European Global Studies of the University of Basel is directly subordinated to the President's Office with staff members from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Business and Economics. Its core role is independent research and teaching, while it also provides an interdisciplinary forum for topical issues with regional, Swiss and international visibility. The Institute serves as a catalyst for research and reflection in cooperation with the participating faculties on Europe in a global context or in a global perspective. As regards teaching, the Institute for European Global Studies builds on the successful model of the interdisciplinary master's degree program European Global Studies.

Your position

Your responsibilities as a professor
The professorship will complement the spectrum of expertise that exists within the participating academic disciplines (history, political science, law, business and economics). The ideal candidate's research profile will center around the study of Europe in a global perspective and must include interdisciplinary experience in order to ensure the continued success of the existing teaching and research portfolio. Responsibilities comprise high-profile, network-oriented research, a mandatory teaching component in accordance with the regulations for academic staff at the University of Basel and participation in the university administration.

Your responsibilities as the director
As the Institute’s director, you will lead the Institute for European Global Studies and be responsible for the perception of its functions and the continuity of its work, nurturing contacts within both an academic and a social context. You will collaborate with the participating faculties and play a role in creating synergies with thematically relevant units of the faculties, including with a view to large-scale research projects. As director, you will also be concerned with procuring external funding and with raising the international profile of the institute. You will actively advance the interdisciplinary agenda. Your profile
The successful candidate will be an established researcher in the field of European Global Studies. Prerequisites include an interdisciplinary focus and background and a readiness to network, while historical competency is desirable. Preference will be given to candidates who meet the requirements for both roles (professor and director), particularly as a result of relevant management experience. Given the regional context of the role as the Institute's director, fluency in German is an asset.
