swisspeace is a practice- oriented peace research institute associated with the University of Basel. It is a member of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences and has working relations hips with many Universities worldwide. swisspeace contributes to the improvement of conflict prevention and conflict transformation by producing innovative research, shaping discourses on international peace policy, developing and applying new peacebuilding tools and methodologies, supporting and advising other peace actors, as well as by providing and facilitating spaces for analysis, discussion, critical reflection and learning.

To reinforce its Mediation Program, swisspeace is looking for a

Senior Researcher

Starting date: 1 November 2018 (or by agreement – 1 January 2019 at the latest )

The swisspeace Mediation Program supports ongoing mediation processes and conducts mediation related research projects. It provides training for mediators, diplomats, UN staff, peacebuilding practitioners and representatives of conflict parties. It cooperates closely with partner organizations from Switzerland, the EU, the UN and specific conflict regions.

Your tasks:
• Develop innovative multiannual research projects related to mediation and raise funds from Swiss and international research funding bodies ;
• Generate high- quality research output s ( academic publications, participation in international conferences, networking, policy -relevant documents etc.) and contribut e to strengthening the international research profile of swisspeace;
• Supervise and support MA and PhD students;
• Teach at the University of Basel at the graduate and postgraduate level;
• Contribute actively to the dialogue between research, policy and practice in the mediation field and beyond;
• Contribute to shaping and implementing swisspeace’s overall strategic development and strengthen its visibility;
• Possibly act as research coordinator, creating spaces for exchange between researchers at swisspeace and representing swisspeace in research- related events and with academic partners.

Your profile:
• PhD in political science, international relations, sociology, history, social anthropology or a related discipline, with particular interest and expertise in peace studies and mediation;
• Excellent research track record with peer -reviewed publications in t op- ranked academic journals and relevant contributions at academic conferences ;
• Proven ability to acquire research funding;
• Previous teaching experience is an asset;
• Links with universities and research institutions in Switzerland and abroad;
• Strong interest in exchanges between research, policy and practice, and in supporting the successful implementation of ongoing mandates and practice projects;
• Excellent written and spoken English. German and French are assets.
